Charles converted the quarter Million dollars worth of gold to three extremely rare stamps. They were in his travel case, glued to his letter to Reggie (Audrey Hepburn) and overlooked by everyone, the whole time. The man we met as Mr. Bartholomew (Walter Matthau) is actually Carson Dyle, who survived being shot by the Germans, and is now killing off his former cohorts in his search for the money. Peter/Alex/Adam (Cary Grant) and Reggie stop him. The following morning, Reggie goes to the American Embassy to return the stamps, where she discovers that Peter/Alex/Adam is actually Brian Crookshanks, the Treasury agent assigned to recover the money. He proposes marriage, and she accepts.
