Adolf Hitler (Noah Taylor) tells his superiors that he is giving his last speech, then delivers a tirade against Jews. As Max Rothman (John Cusack) is heading to the Metropole to see Hitler's portfolio, he is savagely beaten by a group of toughs who have just come from Hitler's anti-Semitic speech and is left bleeding in the snow. Hitler hangs around in the Metropole until closing time, then storms off. The viewer is left to infer the obvious, i.e. that because he was unable to sell his art to Max, Hitler
stayed in public speaking and politics (and was possibly given even more
anti-Semitic vigor due to a feeling that Max had lied to him).
