Whales become beached and the village tries to get the big one, the leader, out into the ocean so the others will follow but they fail. While the villagers walk back to town to rest, Pai (Keisha Castle-Hughes) goes to the "leader" whale and
climbs on top of it and it turns around and she rides it out into the ocean.
The other whales follow her. The villagers see this. Pai
grabs onto the whale and rides it while it dives and she prepares to die in
the ocean. But she is found and brought to the hospital where she recovers.
The movie ends with her and Koro (Rawiri Paratene) in a ceremonial boat going out into the
ocean, Pai wearing the symbolic necklace showing that she will indeed be the
