To Kill a Mockingbird
Although Atticus Finch (Gregory Peck) lays down the evidence proving that Tom Robinson (Brock Peters) is not guilty of the rape, the bigoted jury still finds him guilty. Atticus decides to appeal the conviction, and returns home with his kids. The sheriff (Frank Overton) comes by and tells Atticus that Tom Robinson has been "accidentally" killed in an escape attempt. Months later, Scout (Mary Badham) and her brother Jem (Phillip Alford) are walking home at night when the real rapist, Bob Ewell (James Anderson) attacks them. He breaks Jem's arm and knocks him out. Someone then comes and an unseen scuffle happens, in which it is evident from the noise and movement that Bob is killed. Scout gets up to see that the man that saved them is carrying Jem home and follows him. Atticus calls the sheriff after Scout tells him what happens and they discover it was "Boo" Radley (Robert Duvall) that saved Jem. He turns out to be friendly and shy and the sheriff informs Atticus that Boo jammed a kitchen fork into Bob's ribs. The sheriff also knows that it isn't right to try and convict Boo because of his reclusiveness, his past, and the fact that he only did it to save the kids. Scout takes Boo home and as the adult narrator, informs us that she and her brother finished school, Boo came out after a while, and pretty much everything was fine from there on in.
