Marlee (Rachel Weisz) and boyfriend Nick Easter (John Cusack) have been trying to get on juries in order to turn them against jury-fixing consultant Rankin Fitch (Gene Hackman) and his gun-manufacturing clients. When Marlee was a young girl, her sister was one of the students killed in a school shooting in a small Indiana town that lost its case against a gun maker thanks to Fitch. Nick gets on a jury in a landmark case against a gun manufacturer in New Orleans, and they convince Fitch to pay $15 million to sway the jury for his client. The money is wired right before Fitch discovers the link between Marlee and the school tragedy. Nick lets the jury decide on its own to hold the gun maker liable, giving a fair victory and huge settlement to the widow and her honest lawyer, Wendell Rohr (Dustin Hoffman). The couple will give most of their $15 million payment to families of the school shooting victims. Fitch's career as a jury consultant is over and the pair will blackmail Fitch with proof of the payoff if he exposes the swindle.
