(the movie ending)After it is revealed to the mob that Donnie Brasco (Johnny Depp) is actually FBI Agent Joseph Pistone, 'Lefty' Ruggiero (Al Pacino) receives a phone call. He subsequently takes off all his jewelry and leaves his apartment. The movie implies that Lefty is killed for his incompetence in "vouching" for Donnie, and nothing is said of Sonny Black's (Michael Madsen's) fate. Meanwhile, Joseph Pistone receives a medal and a $500.00 check from the FBI. His undercover work helped convict 100 mob members and he now lives with his family in an undisclosed location.
(What really happened to the real Lefty and Sonny) The real Benjamin 'Lefty' Ruggerio was not killed. He
was picked up by FBI agents as he left his apartment
on August 30, 1981. As a result of Pistone's work,
Ruggerio was sentenced to serve twenty years in
prison. In the early 1990's, he was released from
prison, and on Thanksgiving Day, 1995, at age 72, he
died of cancer in his New York home. On August 12, 1982, Sonny Black's body was discovered
in a hospital body bag in a creek near South Avenue
close to the Geothals Toll Bridge that connects Staten
Island to Linden, New Jersey. His hands had been cut
off, and his body contained several gunshot wounds.
