Confronted with incriminating photos, Judge Fleming (John Forsythe) smugly admits to his attorney Kirkland (Al Pacino) that he did in fact rape his accuser. Since Fleming had refused to reopen the McCullough case – resulting in young McCullough’s insanity and death – Kirkland chooses justice over career, and opens the defense team’s case by telling the jury that Fleming confessed to the rape and should go to jail. The courtroom erupts and the enraged Kirkland has to be physically removed. The implication is that whether or not Fleming is convicted, the judge’s high-placed allies will destroy Kirkland’s career, exactly as his friends had warned.
