A reporter exposes Frank T.J. Mackey (Tom Cruise) as a fraud; he actually owes everything to his mom. His dad, Big Earl Partridge (Jason Robards), walked out on them. Phil Parma (Philip Seymour Hoffman) attempts to reunite the estranged father and son. Frank goes to his dad and forgives him…

Officer Jim Kurring (John C. Reilly) never realizes that the woman he’s fallen in love with, Claudia Gator (Melora Walters) is a junkie…

After deliberately giving an incorrect answer to the “game-winning” question, Stanley Spector (Jeremy Blackman) pees his pants on-stage…

Quiz Kid Donnie Smith (William H. Macy) robs his former employer in order to get enough cash for the dental work he thinks he needs to make the bartender fall in love with him…

Rose Gator (Melinda Dillon) realizes that her husband, game show host Jimmy Gator (Philip Baker Hall) molested their daughter Caludia, leading to her low self-esteem and drug addiction…

Linda Partridge (Julianne Moore) takes an overdose of Big Earl’s meds over the guilt of betraying him…

Then, as everyone settles in for the night…

IT RAINS FROGS!

Stanley watches the frogs fall, and makes a profound statement something like “This kind of thing happens.” He wakes up his sleeping father and tells him that he expects to be treated like a human being.

The frogs come through the skylight, killing Jimmy Gator. His wife has left him to be with their daughter. The two women huddle in the frog storm.

Mid-burglary, the frogs knock Donnie Smith off the building’s ladder. When he lands, his mouth is smashed to mush, pretty much negating any chance he had of buying a beautiful smile. Officer Kurring comes by, but instead of arresting him, helps him return the money.

Big Earl dies peacefully; Frank goes to the hospital where Linda will survive. They make peace.
