Laszlo Almasy's (Ralph Fiennes) plane is shot down on his way back to the cave to get his wounded girlfriend Katherine (Kristin Scott Thomas), so he doesn't make it there in time and she dies. He finally dies after telling his story to nurse Hana (Juliette Binoche) while she cares for him by his side, and she leaves with Caravaggio (Willem Dafoe) to go back to her country.
