The Lost Weekend
Academy Award – BEST PICTURE – 1945

Don Birnam (Ray Milland) is an alcoholic writer supported by his brother and loved by a loyal girlfriend, Helen St. James (Jane Wyman). After missing a train for a long weekend to the country with his brother, Don is left alone to deal with his alcoholism. Everything bad that can happen to an alcoholic does, including a bout of the D.T.’s. Don finally decides to kill himself but Helen gets wind of it and tells him that she would rather have him drunk than dead. Don then has a moment of clarity, puts his cigarette out in his drink and begins to write about his “lost weekend”.
