The rivalry between Holly (Betty Hutton) and Sebastian (Cornel Wilde) climaxes in Sebastian attempting a very dangerous stunt that goes wrong, paralyzing his arm and ending his career.

Buttons (Jimmy Stewart), the mysterious clown who never removes his makeup, is a surgeon on the run from the law for euthanizing his wife. He is forced to reveal himself when racketeers cause the circus train to crash and the manager Brad (Charlton Heston) is seriously injured and in need of a blood transfusion. Sebastian offers his blood, and the procedure reveals that there may be hope of his recovering the use of his arm sometime down the road.

After all the drama, the circus arrives in town, with Holly triumphantly singing The Greatest Show on Earth.
