Bored, married couple Phil and Claire Foster (Steve Carell and Tina Fey) decide to spice up their weekly date night by going into Manhattan for dinner. They try to get seated at a chic restaurant but without reservations, they are turned away. When they hear that a reservation for two under the name “Tripplehorn” goes unanswered, they take that reservation and have a fantastic dinner. However, after dinner they are kidnapped by two dirty cops who think they are the real Tripplehorn’s who are blackmailing District Attorney Crenshaw with the threat of a zip drive containing sensitive information.
Phil and Claire escape their captors but realize they need to track down the real Tripplehorn’s, get the zip drive, give it to the DA and get their names cleared. Through a series of misadventures, the zip drive is destroyed, but not before Phil sees that is contains pictures of the DA with prostitutes. With the help of computer whiz Grant (Mark Wahlberg), Phil and Claire track down the DA and have a confrontation with him and mob boss Joe Miletto (Ray Liotta), who was behind the blackmail all along. The cops show up before the big shootout, all the bad guys are arrested and Phil and Claire finish their date night at a diner in the wee hours.
