After a night together in London, Maurice (James Wilby) asks Alec Scudder not to go to Argentina, but Scudder rebuffs him, saying they could never be together in England anyway. Maurice goes to bid him farewell on the boat, but Alec never arrives. Maurice realises that Alec has agreed to stay with him.
Maurice goes to see Clive Durham (Hugh Grant) a final time to say goodbye. He wishes Clive well in his socially acceptable but sham marriage, and tells him that he is in love with Alec. Clive is shocked and clearly upset as Maurice leaves to find Alec. They are reunited at the boat house where Alec promises "Now, we shan't never be parted. It's finished."
